Pretty and Fat(ening)
So I ran across this entry on boingboing and it inspired Brian and I to spend some time on Sunday trying to make them. Brian, Patrick and I sat around, wolfed down omelets and bacon (really, everything does go better with bacon) and then proceeded to whip up some spring-time, sugary snacks.
The flowerpot cupcake idea came from Yummy Fun (warning: annoying Flash site; turn your volume down / off.)
Some random notes/tips:
- Fruit roll-ups don't come in "flavors" any more. They come in "flavors" like "Color by the Foot" and "Extreme 3D". So, well, the "seaweed" isn't really green.
- Don't fill the terracotta pots up to anywhere near the line. The batter really expands. We had to cut the tops off -- I would recommend leaving a solid 1.25" from the top of the pot.
- Have more friends over. *burp; unbuttons top button of pants*
- Don't buy extra twinkies. *buuuuuurp* Damn you, cream filling!

The cupcakes are yellow or chocolate cake batter, filled into terracotta pots lined with aluminum foil. Then we frosted the tops with matching frosting, sprinkled colored sugar on tops of some, and then poked aluminum-wrapped flowers into them.

1 Comments:
Some friends of mine have an alternative to the candy maki that uses rice krispie treats as the rice layer, and gummy worms as the fish filling. Given the chewiness of rice krispie treats, it might slow down your consumption a bit. Or maybe not -- I've seen you eat.
