Mike (a friend from the gym) defends scum.

For example, he just got off a drug dealer that shot his drug boss (not sure of the correct term).The shooter was caught stealing; the drug boss found out, pulled a gun and was going to kill him. Shooter pulled the trigger first but drew second.

Mike he got him off on self-defense (and one of the prosecutors witnesses purjored himself on the stand and admitted it). If you are in grave harm and you didn't initiate it (e.g. pull the gun first) then it is self-defense. The other circumstances shouldn't matter. Mike is pretty unphased at this point by the whole situation: he just sees these people as "Life Sentences on the installment plan" -- even if he gets them off or gets their sentences reduced from 20 years to 7, they keep coming back and keep going back in.

Oddly enough, his favorite criminals are drug dealers. Why? They pay their bills.
